Talk:Earlgate

From All-That-Is

The (Discworld-inspired) novel idea I'm kicking around in my head is set in Earlgate, "The City of Angels", and the capital of All-That-Is. The main character is called Stu, last name Wart, and he makes a living knowing what's going on in the city. He's pretty much the centre of gossip- if something's happening, he either knows about it, or is going to, pretty soon.

Every god of All-That-Is has a "Voice". They're the head of the church, and the only one in the world with regular contact with their god. Like the Pope, or Alan Rickman in Dogma. You get the idea. Anyway, a man named Timson decides to kill the Voice of Norbi (the god of flying - the main God of Earlgate, since the main population of Earlgate is Angels.) and it's up to Stu to stop him.

Earlgate is a huge island, and a huge city, and it's divided into various suburbs. There are three giant towers (referred to as "Hands") many km high. The central one is where the Nobility of Earlgate live, as well as being the home of the Voice of Norbi. Most of the other gods of the world have a church there as well.

The right hand is where all the guild headquarters are. The left hand is apartments, and most of the angel population of the world live there.

North of the central hand is a giant curved wall, built to protect the tower from possible pirate attacks. The wall is so huge, it's a suburb of its own, and its on this wall that Stu has his apartment. Between the wall and the central hand are the suburbs known collectively as "south side", and between the wall and the water north (remembering that Earlgate is an island) are the "north side" suburbs, where Angel presence is almost nil.

North side is mainly populated by Dwarves, Humans, Gnomes, Fairies, Peedlings, a handful of Orcs and Ogres, and some Elves and Demons. It's considered pretty dangerous.

At the very top of the island is the suburb known as "The Docks". The Docks was originally a single dock, but it's since grown in size so much that there are people who have lived in The Docks their whole life, and never seen the ocean. (except for the time their floor collapsed, and they woke up drowning.)
